MISSION STATEMENT - DEI COMMITTEE

The DEI committee has been established to assess barriers faced by individuals in our community who identify as Black, Indigenous, People Of Color (BIPOC) and/or Transgender who would otherwise participate in the Toronto Triggerfish. The DEI committee is required to provide recommendations to the Executive Committee to address and eliminate these barriers created by the Toronto Triggerfish in its operations.

MILESTONES

The DEI committee currently consists of five Triggerfish members and is currently led by the club’s DEI Coordinator (Rosalee). The committee will engage with current membership, former membership, and external experts. So far, the following milestones have been reached:

  • Jul 2020 - Kick-Off meeting DEI committee;

  • Jul to Nov 2020 - Draft of DEI survey for current and former Triggerfish membership;

  • Nov 2020 - Award of CAP Grant of Water Polo Canada to the Triggerfish for DEI related initiatives;

  • Dec 2020 - Hiring of Challenge Accepted as DEI consultant;

  • Jun 2021 - Completion of DEI survey by current and former Triggerfish membership focused on determining existing barriers for Trans*, Non-binary and BIPOC communities towards participation in the club and sport;

  • Jul 2021 - Leadership Inclusion Training Session: Trans* & Non-binary Inclusion in Sports (facilitated by Challenge Accepted);

  • Dec 2021 - Completion of DEI survey report by Challenge Accepted, including recommendations for the club on how to decrease existing participation barriers for Trans*, Non-binary and BIPOC communities. Final report offered to Triggerfish Leadership (Executive Committee & Coaches).

  • Feb 2022 - Start implementation of recommendations by Challenge Accepted towards decreasing participation barriers for Trans*, Non-binary and BIPOC communities.

  • May 2022 - Town Hall Meeting to discuss DEI survey report outcome with current and former membership of the Triggerfish.

  • Sep 2022 - Addition of the position of DEI Coordinator to the Triggerfish’ Executive Committee.

  • Nov 2022 - Intake of (Queer) Women, Trans*, and Non-binary (WTN) folks in first WTN intake session.

  • Jan 2023 - Award of Reaching Each and Everyone Grant by Canada Parks and Recreation Association (CPRA) for WTN related initiatives.

  • Feb 2023 - Start of offering free once-per-month WTN practices.

  • Mar/Apr 2023 - Planned start of offering subsidized inclusive swim attire and binders to Triggerfish membership.

  • Apr/May 2023 - Planned club-wide training session focused on Trans* and Non-binary Community Inclusion and Consent Culture. In addition, interested members will receive facilitator training by Challenge Accepted focused on offering training sustainably in the future.

  • Apr/May 2023 - Planned second WTN intake, while offering heavily reduced membership fees to WTN folks with reduced financial means.

  • Jul/Aug 2023 - Planned inclusive language update of Triggerfish official documents and website by Challenge Accepted.
