Frequently asked questions.. Frequently given answers!
What is a Triggerfish?
Triggerfish come in many varieties, and tend to be very playful, aggressive fish. In some parts of the ocean, they are the next most dangerous creature after sharks! Tough-skinned triggerfishes are able to view a predator with one eye, and with the other, locate a convenient crevice to dive into. Once inside, they raise the first dorsal spine (locking it erect with a "trigger" device in the second spine), lower the pelvis and become firmly wedged in. These fish are usually edible. The best tasting is the Queen Triggerfish which is sometimes, but rarely, poisonous.
I'm not gay... is it OK if I play with the Triggerfish?
The purpose of our organization is to provide a positive and comfortable environment for members of the LGBT communities. If you are as comfortable with LGBT people as you are in the water, then you are very welcome to jump in the pool with us.
Do I have to know anything before I play?
Most of the players on the team had never touched a water polo ball before they came to their first Triggerfish practice. The team welcomes first-time players, and provides a thorough orientation at your first practice.
Members of the team start at all levels, from beginner to those who have played in college. We're all dedicated to having fun and helping each other improve. If you want to play an exciting, fun sport - we're here to help you.
How good a swimmer do I need to be?
While you might not have perfected eggbeater (or even know what it is!), as a new player you should be a confident swimmer who feels very comfortable in the water. If you can swim multiple lengths of the pool continuously, you're ready to start practicing with the Toronto Triggerfish. You’ll be tired after your first practice but every practice is a great workout and you’ll build your endurance in no time.
We encourage competitive players to join the Downtown Swim Club (DSC) for fitness training. Twice weekly water polo practice by itself will not give you enough fitness training to play at the most competitive levels. Swim practice will get you more comfortable in the water, and the DSC coaches are all water polo aware.
Where do I sign up?
We accept new members the first Sunday of every month. Send a note to info@triggerfishwaterpolo.ca for details about the date/time. For additional information, read the "How to Join Us" page for all the details about your first practice.
